Respect My Culture!: The Fight Against Cultural Appropriation

Date: 16-04-2023

Location: Ru Paré

Cultural appreciation or cultural appropriation? What do these terms mean and how do you draw the line between the two? What can we do to put cultural appropriation on the agenda, fight against it, and eventually: prevent it. In this workshop, Pravini Baboeram – activist and co-founder of the action group ‘Holi is geen Houseparty’ (Holi is not a House party) – will cover these themes and will help participants in recognizing and fighting forms of cultural appropriation. She will use the campaign ‘Holi is geen Houseparty’ to tell about the challenges of the campaign and about the strategies that were used to combat the appropriation of the Hindu spring festival Holi. Participants can bring their own case into the workshop (email in advance).

Note: the workshop will be held in English, but we will do what we can to make the workshop available and accessible for everyone, so please let us know if you don’t speak/understand English and we’ll see what we can do. Email us at: theartsofresistance@gmail.com
